HDR Images
HDR (High Dynamic Range) images blend multiple exposures to create a single image that encompasses a larger range of light than digital sensors are currently capable of. The current sensors are designed to mimic the range of film (approximately 5-6 stops of light), while the human eye is capable of seeing up to 20 stops of light. HDR images more closely approximate the way the scene appeared to the human eye than any current camera can. Hopefully camera companies will soon develop sensors with a broader range of light sensitivity than they currently do.
